No worries, I'll build my own terrain!<br /><p></p><p>The battle board was mapped out using isometric graph paper to set the grid, then it was cut out of a piece of 1/2" (paper backed) foam board. Carefully flocked, the edges painted to clean up a little, and little felt pads added to "float" the board a little (and level it out and protect whatever surface it's sitting on.)</p><p>The rocks were carved from blue insulation foam and painted in a couple layers of wood glue to add durability. The shrine was simply built from scraps of wood and card. And the bamboo sticks came from a bamboo kitchen place mat.</p><p>I'll touch on the urban terrain in another post; it was created long ago for my collection, but it will certainly find some use with Senjutsu.</p><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-57543368257358830142023-04-11T10:41:00.001-05:002023-04-11T10:41:00.185-05:00Yaji and Kita<p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGVmtwyuR3Yg_Miupum9HRjonXE0uFmkqlfrN0wl8tmK2eh4AHeQQPpywdA4tt5R2k_ko36yYTMfWXEB7YCc4RFTHj8rOn53cP_c9e0awxebi8KAzFqbbZxI7mjt8o3WjpqR47dE53ZxanagpPwtRVN3Fq_HShkS-2U_7XT5Ig6ZRtRScojYm8AAjdzw/s1365/Yaji%20Kita%20and%20traveller.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="1000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGVmtwyuR3Yg_Miupum9HRjonXE0uFmkqlfrN0wl8tmK2eh4AHeQQPpywdA4tt5R2k_ko36yYTMfWXEB7YCc4RFTHj8rOn53cP_c9e0awxebi8KAzFqbbZxI7mjt8o3WjpqR47dE53ZxanagpPwtRVN3Fq_HShkS-2U_7XT5Ig6ZRtRScojYm8AAjdzw/w293-h400/Yaji%20Kita%20and%20traveller.jpg" width="293" /></a></div><p></p><p>I finished painting a few more civilian figures for my 40mm Japanese collection. These are, from left, a well-to-do traveller, and famous adventurers Yaji and Kita.</p><p>Who are Yaji and Kita? They are the main characters if the story of Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige, a comic serial/novel written by Jippensha Ikku from 1802 to 1822. The stories of the duo take place during their pilgrimage from Edo to Kyoto, and also serves as an informal guide to the Tokaido road.</p><p>If you want to read it in English, you can find it under the title "Shank's Mare." The stories rely on a lot of Japanese puns and wordplay, so much of the humor might be lost on Western readers, but the book was still entertaining even if only on a simple level.</p><p>I commissioned Steve Barber Models to sculpt the figures based on a statue (with a few minor changes) of the literary characters, which is located near the Sanjo Ohashi bridge in Kyoto.</p><p>The other figure is a simple traveller using the Yaji model as a base, but using the head from another Steve Barber figure (I can't remember which one right off.) </p><p>The bases are by Proxie Models, and the static grasses and shrubs and flowers are from Army Painter.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8mwpHFdI2BsLS3S4DFNgaaiSmIdrXwj6h653PL0-LbXsZnkRDzvbE8wrhzHL_5S0NkTnLEY7iBKBTU3dl9xte0Fv_Wnnd1PTW8jPR6zWttUCB4MsthwFsIoMU4vCAAkmrkJICou0zhvUrPMZftHj6OZ5npZBMRwPTmWhFTA-0Q8sOTakd6JL_GeRt9w/s716/YajiKita.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="716" data-original-width="600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8mwpHFdI2BsLS3S4DFNgaaiSmIdrXwj6h653PL0-LbXsZnkRDzvbE8wrhzHL_5S0NkTnLEY7iBKBTU3dl9xte0Fv_Wnnd1PTW8jPR6zWttUCB4MsthwFsIoMU4vCAAkmrkJICou0zhvUrPMZftHj6OZ5npZBMRwPTmWhFTA-0Q8sOTakd6JL_GeRt9w/w536-h640/YajiKita.jpg" width="536" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-84460649020449582492023-04-07T14:23:00.001-05:002023-04-07T14:23:00.196-05:00Samurai house<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHyFbAXnXWoRH08_qfBF5oKkHLgmjDj1HHjEHZTNZrWhpvGGnrIyFDR4AzMsrSllQeTbuoK15zV9Ih4F0y-OTVz6O1a_9A4IAt_l_6Fpbeg3RC49UoK4TpGR8r3odpHOLBxLWuGb3rIgZE6PD80Nmza0YTam8YHmrcJ5OOhO59h3Pkr9KcB83PbqPt4g/s1000/one%20build%20config.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="520" data-original-width="1000" height="332" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHyFbAXnXWoRH08_qfBF5oKkHLgmjDj1HHjEHZTNZrWhpvGGnrIyFDR4AzMsrSllQeTbuoK15zV9Ih4F0y-OTVz6O1a_9A4IAt_l_6Fpbeg3RC49UoK4TpGR8r3odpHOLBxLWuGb3rIgZE6PD80Nmza0YTam8YHmrcJ5OOhO59h3Pkr9KcB83PbqPt4g/w640-h332/one%20build%20config.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>Test of Honour requires at least 2 or 3 buildings for many of the missions (and the core game does come with some flats to represent buildings and terrain,) but I game in 40mm, and there are not a lot of 40mm building options. So I build my own. Here are a couple new structures I've added.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo9X3acKVDsNeV99Y-9ynNA_nJBKJo-VW1mFUDBID59BgZf9xzw4NaOjGgbMqNfZJq8CKQPGvr-Vc8A2jAj-OTJXEAkYZ5L-gnoc9LuxJfYq7KGk7bX3JKGzQo5-k35sSm1_cLv9pNey5aYUVqKBNTahXEemtQWN5Fl6LA3tN-yuK9u34BYRmLIkQP_g/s700/Interior.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="525" data-original-width="700" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo9X3acKVDsNeV99Y-9ynNA_nJBKJo-VW1mFUDBID59BgZf9xzw4NaOjGgbMqNfZJq8CKQPGvr-Vc8A2jAj-OTJXEAkYZ5L-gnoc9LuxJfYq7KGk7bX3JKGzQo5-k35sSm1_cLv9pNey5aYUVqKBNTahXEemtQWN5Fl6LA3tN-yuK9u34BYRmLIkQP_g/s320/Interior.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />They were straightforward to build -- I used matt board with a pebbled texture (it was sold that way), measured it, cut it (and the windows and doors), and wrapped it around a wooded base (for strength and stability.) I added several pieces of basswood strips for the exterior beams and frames. Add paint and almost done.<p></p><p>The roofs were simply pre-molded plastic styrene sheets meant for model railroading. I used Spanish Tile sheets. A few companies make them -- Plastruct, JTT Miniatures, and Precision Products (dollhouse company.) I used JTT. I primed and painted the sheets, built basic roof frames to fit each building, and then simply used a hot glue gun to affix the sheets to the frame.</p><p>I used my old building as reference for measurements specifically because I wanted the walls and doorways to all match so that the structures could be combined to make one or two larger buildings. Several of those configurations are shown. I want to add one more structure -- a small square hallway section -- for even more combinations.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhHtyWFIoNzwOTG3yIuBjLhf7qFxdUmCiy9vbBGl7crcEJnJ8BUFSROX-2C0T8AH_ySsdEU4CKlCliTrWtkMgPqoii-J090HGN_rfc-xYjEoD5PQHAOL9lHlCDsNX_YjAOJS77DbXjW-BMjDrYS_sWmRk76WXA1zcnLPYaWq0YKCCQGFazxP_2-dKqxw/s800/wip1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhHtyWFIoNzwOTG3yIuBjLhf7qFxdUmCiy9vbBGl7crcEJnJ8BUFSROX-2C0T8AH_ySsdEU4CKlCliTrWtkMgPqoii-J090HGN_rfc-xYjEoD5PQHAOL9lHlCDsNX_YjAOJS77DbXjW-BMjDrYS_sWmRk76WXA1zcnLPYaWq0YKCCQGFazxP_2-dKqxw/w640-h480/wip1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtDTWh1ntCZS5-l_rVL8XDj-dbEyeS09xoIDEJ-TQIKrbb_MHsTHQyUYV8eJEcrq26EB0HcP6sFycFdNDUoUmMlZFxa8hg4g6ahuq6zcSdiukZz8xaLOWi86JjPKBbinTk0aAK96AJaLaTyhkAqyXbE7aZS5Ee9EXH9VEAGiEUTKvTy-PFJEXWPbYx0Q/s800/wip2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="733" data-original-width="800" height="586" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtDTWh1ntCZS5-l_rVL8XDj-dbEyeS09xoIDEJ-TQIKrbb_MHsTHQyUYV8eJEcrq26EB0HcP6sFycFdNDUoUmMlZFxa8hg4g6ahuq6zcSdiukZz8xaLOWi86JjPKBbinTk0aAK96AJaLaTyhkAqyXbE7aZS5Ee9EXH9VEAGiEUTKvTy-PFJEXWPbYx0Q/w640-h586/wip2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5tMJPZNbijTGI8dMEX-pYopLo_rDOGTYupzJxqrKvrrdXtScyyy_nu6hPq5OF-guIXhHGkoJKPtmsrESz17B_QQXYZl7fSmV04pZl7ykC6jc0nHs-MEPJhvAlGnC0gTad4M8oiKubhIR8CoH4fTwHuXyTHVop7iGYa-_bUN-IQzlgCNVM7uSsg0aHGQ/s800/wip3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="538" data-original-width="800" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5tMJPZNbijTGI8dMEX-pYopLo_rDOGTYupzJxqrKvrrdXtScyyy_nu6hPq5OF-guIXhHGkoJKPtmsrESz17B_QQXYZl7fSmV04pZl7ykC6jc0nHs-MEPJhvAlGnC0gTad4M8oiKubhIR8CoH4fTwHuXyTHVop7iGYa-_bUN-IQzlgCNVM7uSsg0aHGQ/w640-h430/wip3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivpJr3lx1JpZacZ82rjOQDvXPPY-8jH8EUPiVSvuNPVyQDbrs9LH6y0tUlnBLb7Wcj2Wu-SuQlXaYjVqgJvrHuQVfCnz2LyCNMK50vaqzxcix_BBo2dddW2dte5LNQq6K7cf9Aq2mOIeeCOD3Gop-Z_G2iJEgQO-j7CE52KEBTeB1sMNIsioZNMwIHRg/s1800/Options.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1380" data-original-width="1800" height="490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivpJr3lx1JpZacZ82rjOQDvXPPY-8jH8EUPiVSvuNPVyQDbrs9LH6y0tUlnBLb7Wcj2Wu-SuQlXaYjVqgJvrHuQVfCnz2LyCNMK50vaqzxcix_BBo2dddW2dte5LNQq6K7cf9Aq2mOIeeCOD3Gop-Z_G2iJEgQO-j7CE52KEBTeB1sMNIsioZNMwIHRg/w640-h490/Options.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-64861860789464688352023-04-03T14:14:00.004-05:002023-04-03T14:14:32.194-05:00A few shots from more Test of Honour Battles<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVPhVhl9vleNA2-p_LuuPEhf5Yi3KVmolkgaSS3DWj5aWDqfGqVcSbTnOWjDcslG0kUAOLrYeU1iMP4iRYs_G8-9_lzCtYWHqI0oRvCoaMJjVIeQ09AY6rFi_vFHQXw8VbQiv39JZkbgRotSZsEbZeZxbKSA_TrOduupYbY5YzmXetZs1cz4AbHChAxQ/s2667/IMG-0142.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2667" data-original-width="2000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVPhVhl9vleNA2-p_LuuPEhf5Yi3KVmolkgaSS3DWj5aWDqfGqVcSbTnOWjDcslG0kUAOLrYeU1iMP4iRYs_G8-9_lzCtYWHqI0oRvCoaMJjVIeQ09AY6rFi_vFHQXw8VbQiv39JZkbgRotSZsEbZeZxbKSA_TrOduupYbY5YzmXetZs1cz4AbHChAxQ/w480-h640/IMG-0142.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>We played a few more battles this weekend. Nothing to report, but here are a few images from that game.<br />The miniatures, by the way, are from Steve Barber Models. Most of mine have been heavily converted, but even the out-of-the-box sculpts are great and easy to paint. They also make for a great-looking game.<p></p><p>Mechanics-wise, we decided not to change the measurements (since the game is scaled for 28mm figures), and everything still works out.</p><p>Surprisingly, we didn't get any photos of the new buildings I built for the occasion, so I'll show those later in a separate post. (Also, surprisingly, despite the buildings having fully open and easily reachable areas, we have yet to send any of our forces indoors for a fight; we might just have to set up an indoors battle.)</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEx7Z4SvgA5pEW0davuGCG9zpw2HT_VbyavZOtfMD_QEvtnNcTRRy1e79XJ-qjSIoZJ8Wai53hlyL2v-219bldVm7AirAHjoiUfGPuTw4-HPv5bmVHoImnFNoxmCeEZ7mgqZKegQm9ry88vCRQXv5ljWXt7fJRbPdrNFEBoRuYQHa_DVNwlV45LtebDg/s2434/IMG-0133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2434" data-original-width="2000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEx7Z4SvgA5pEW0davuGCG9zpw2HT_VbyavZOtfMD_QEvtnNcTRRy1e79XJ-qjSIoZJ8Wai53hlyL2v-219bldVm7AirAHjoiUfGPuTw4-HPv5bmVHoImnFNoxmCeEZ7mgqZKegQm9ry88vCRQXv5ljWXt7fJRbPdrNFEBoRuYQHa_DVNwlV45LtebDg/w526-h640/IMG-0133.jpg" width="526" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCJBY3YX5sRK6gCsHN-q4b3okZi6NfgYZD-jMWy5cYoLeuLlbRp5lIHWcmmHRsDA_bmXc4M5A1UjRBo6drf165OxcnLuHZeiQXRumcDOahqMJ-yRjp9PwAQeTO5bzSoBxNJwCCf2aYGE9p3E4KEOCj_BCGh0iJ8pqcTul1GO_UdxHP1Trl8FenaH0oqA/s2667/IMG-0149.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2667" data-original-width="2000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCJBY3YX5sRK6gCsHN-q4b3okZi6NfgYZD-jMWy5cYoLeuLlbRp5lIHWcmmHRsDA_bmXc4M5A1UjRBo6drf165OxcnLuHZeiQXRumcDOahqMJ-yRjp9PwAQeTO5bzSoBxNJwCCf2aYGE9p3E4KEOCj_BCGh0iJ8pqcTul1GO_UdxHP1Trl8FenaH0oqA/w480-h640/IMG-0149.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaj4OY1oqTSY8FrBIZnamW09sDF9cYO0tbQ6D6QZlQGa0jariH08JFVWdRe7YvQgwEpv5fSOT5fj_ehY0U4ky0sLjehEFN0PYy7HTQWRdv8cW_mK5Fe0UkaSqYFPDn0hXRI9qLYvlVnSnL8NdyXvDcgZ9xb09hDaaGGjqg2QCL7IBn5IfEcHfKQ2US4g/s2667/IMG-0151.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2667" data-original-width="2000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaj4OY1oqTSY8FrBIZnamW09sDF9cYO0tbQ6D6QZlQGa0jariH08JFVWdRe7YvQgwEpv5fSOT5fj_ehY0U4ky0sLjehEFN0PYy7HTQWRdv8cW_mK5Fe0UkaSqYFPDn0hXRI9qLYvlVnSnL8NdyXvDcgZ9xb09hDaaGGjqg2QCL7IBn5IfEcHfKQ2US4g/w480-h640/IMG-0151.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-19176052323165379582023-03-24T15:05:00.001-05:002023-03-24T15:05:00.180-05:00Test of Honour: Group bases<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjclvydfZg6M9wAqHZgXEA_qwJ9kvtm5H1j3pSKwFlGbkV6KuNH-nu-iXcgcRj-binEROPa5Sq722lTxrkU-oRi_euMTJbQc7WxW-uPYV9MaVhkccR9DyYDdpBljhaaMt91e_x-l_IxGjTtN0wz8X2vLAKfvxuuhsnTYU592n3r9gF8TUI35p96TGiBNg/s2066/ToH%20group%20bases.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2066" data-original-width="2000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjclvydfZg6M9wAqHZgXEA_qwJ9kvtm5H1j3pSKwFlGbkV6KuNH-nu-iXcgcRj-binEROPa5Sq722lTxrkU-oRi_euMTJbQc7WxW-uPYV9MaVhkccR9DyYDdpBljhaaMt91e_x-l_IxGjTtN0wz8X2vLAKfvxuuhsnTYU592n3r9gF8TUI35p96TGiBNg/w388-h400/ToH%20group%20bases.jpg" width="388" /></a></div><br />One of the things we lacked for our first Test of Honour game were proper group bases. In the game, you can take figures for your force as either individuals or in groups to help increase strength and durability. The game is meant to be played at 28mm, and there are pre-cut group bases available. But my games are at 40mm scale, so I needed to make my own.<p></p><p>They were quite easy to make and only took me about an hour to complete these seven. I simply marked off where the figures would stand, and used differing types of flock to delineate those areas: short flock for where the figures stand, and static grass for the gaps. For variety, floral accents and stones were added to some of the bases. I also tried out some tall grass on a couple of the bases (ninjas need hiding spots!)</p><p>We don't have any Test of Honour games planned anytime soon, but these bases will still help for a nicer display of the figures in the display case where I have them stored. The bases also serve as nice little vignettes (as seen below with the woodsmen having a conversation.)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia4l5DW8bdZVNFEXbNWwLr1656BZJyyVz3VkOaT_jXy2BnHP8rTMFKTlsvDdhQWQoqNhkv8l1MZGR_GXzHPVU-8DIfWEae24K-nAC7hNrTtRIuKOLUbS01utjTY6WQe3CB_-_KpR-pNlClpYKUypIueKmgWl_2LKMEbF1nsfgu4Omf0QApG35p0kmi4A/s1600/ToH%20group%20base%20Monks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1433" data-original-width="1600" height="574" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia4l5DW8bdZVNFEXbNWwLr1656BZJyyVz3VkOaT_jXy2BnHP8rTMFKTlsvDdhQWQoqNhkv8l1MZGR_GXzHPVU-8DIfWEae24K-nAC7hNrTtRIuKOLUbS01utjTY6WQe3CB_-_KpR-pNlClpYKUypIueKmgWl_2LKMEbF1nsfgu4Omf0QApG35p0kmi4A/w640-h574/ToH%20group%20base%20Monks.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvVRDFM6LeJLgBdqCqj0c06z6SqO9iDmbVCPZQBVG19dwDti3OoCetTKM8N8qkukxJ3NWtvQNe3ObeqydwOIPaAUOVZr7TmA21IObXMi6awBDNn40QZd5_6roewx1B1zz8uZGWh0FAOFbKAKaTZiQFCsJeRKXbEM8AtDdUdia8bN8ZwDj5CSqxlKkcaw/s1600/ToH%20group%20base%20ninjas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvVRDFM6LeJLgBdqCqj0c06z6SqO9iDmbVCPZQBVG19dwDti3OoCetTKM8N8qkukxJ3NWtvQNe3ObeqydwOIPaAUOVZr7TmA21IObXMi6awBDNn40QZd5_6roewx1B1zz8uZGWh0FAOFbKAKaTZiQFCsJeRKXbEM8AtDdUdia8bN8ZwDj5CSqxlKkcaw/w640-h480/ToH%20group%20base%20ninjas.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiBey_pNzYwHPVE38ssAbGtv5kj9x4FmWXs1aKU6N0fo3K8CFLDhVL3sN-9VdB4LPPJh40nfCxb61kawW6fZtSEs5NQKGR6ABe0jhL-gXPo-_NrG_2kWfaMLjVawyr_2lW4tO90G6I4SW-3fxWlpgItTI_6O4OUgIVPP4D8xNlGVsUsg8a7LYzBFeCjA/s1600/ToH%20group%20base%20vignette.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiBey_pNzYwHPVE38ssAbGtv5kj9x4FmWXs1aKU6N0fo3K8CFLDhVL3sN-9VdB4LPPJh40nfCxb61kawW6fZtSEs5NQKGR6ABe0jhL-gXPo-_NrG_2kWfaMLjVawyr_2lW4tO90G6I4SW-3fxWlpgItTI_6O4OUgIVPP4D8xNlGVsUsg8a7LYzBFeCjA/w640-h480/ToH%20group%20base%20vignette.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVSjCAAb65yFJ7BdF0c2pMu4i_EhxOVzQuPN29EMJOISjsNTH2BnC3xKL6dG9o49DguAUqGDsS_Q63W4yPXnLfsuXkeikK3kpz6KfbRxYM4r0_RSJNfIjNpFeDrDrY6ba9I9aguvOBQOBNiYBEaZQo2psrxCFjSbDSv280DQoZyX0gYufrCpYi7i9RiA/s1600/ToH%20Group%20Spears.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVSjCAAb65yFJ7BdF0c2pMu4i_EhxOVzQuPN29EMJOISjsNTH2BnC3xKL6dG9o49DguAUqGDsS_Q63W4yPXnLfsuXkeikK3kpz6KfbRxYM4r0_RSJNfIjNpFeDrDrY6ba9I9aguvOBQOBNiYBEaZQo2psrxCFjSbDSv280DQoZyX0gYufrCpYi7i9RiA/w640-h480/ToH%20Group%20Spears.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-17597661005856211172023-03-20T15:05:00.002-05:002023-03-20T15:05:25.824-05:00Test of Honour 2nd Edition: I finally played!!!<p> A few years ago, I got the cool job of illustrating the tabletop wargame "Test of Honour" (2nd edition.) I found the first edition in a search of rules to use with my 40mm samurai collection from Steve Barber Models, which led me to the illustration job. Last weekend, I finally played the game and had loads of fun! My friend Adam and I were only planning on doing one -- maybe two -- battles, but we were having so much fun, we ended up playing three that day (sorry, wife!)</p><p>The rules were easy; the mechanisms were solid (we had to refer to the book only a few times, being our first/learning game, but the answers were all there;) and the play was fun with plenty of action, tension, and momentum shifts.</p><p>We didn't record a proper session report, but we did take plenty of photos. Here is a selection:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc5ZMuCIveR0I3quxxrmjzO6Dh7wagqsCzu4PX42yNpOGRKqlQmwdwmtfbvCtmDFFOAeJ-eYPcgChv-goBh9THQ9vPPoppjVXIdhhQJ2x05PB9C7c8SSTeL_o7jz1-L4Q_S7v1c526ciyqShc6_1qFwbQM8IfdI-OAiF0nGOPAf8f44MrvJThCz_1kNQ/s2000/3-18-23%20vs%20Adam2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; So we've got these two teams (plus one more yet unpainted) to use as alternative survivors for the game (I still need to make custom cards!)</p><p>My wife had fun painting all the Mandalorians (except Boba Fett who I got to paint), and I enjoyed painting the classic characters.</p><p>Nothing special to mention about the painting or assembly of these figures. They assemble very easily, and there's no conversion work. I'm still hoping Legion comes out with one more bounty hunter or rogue who will fit in with Jabba's pre-New Hope gang here so I can make it a full 6-survivor team.</p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-954187012121317382021-04-01T16:25:00.000-05:002021-04-01T16:25:56.250-05:00Dreadball: New teams (to us anyway)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyM7_vE44acHCzTGGK3qTuyFDKuk217-ALiQrW3qeWNMaPqVh1yJ5poZtS9Cu7QM9HKLKKDPGxotFMd0Fapmsd4La7u1zvuG6KdPMiHgyiOoR5M2nE5G5m_9Z2g3Ft_Br35CkGiwbsxhy4/s2400/The+Loose+Cogs+mechanites.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="791" data-original-width="2400" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyM7_vE44acHCzTGGK3qTuyFDKuk217-ALiQrW3qeWNMaPqVh1yJ5poZtS9Cu7QM9HKLKKDPGxotFMd0Fapmsd4La7u1zvuG6KdPMiHgyiOoR5M2nE5G5m_9Z2g3Ft_Br35CkGiwbsxhy4/w640-h210/The+Loose+Cogs+mechanites.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>My wife and I painted up a couple new Dreadball teams to play!</p><p>She did a great job with a full team of mechanites -- The Loose Cogs.<br />I assembled them for her, and expected to help out painting a few, but she took over and did a great job. She did it all: She "built" each team member on paper; organized her strikers, jacks and guards; and chose colors to reflect that organization (mostly green are guards, tan/beige/gold are the strikers, and blue are the jacks.) </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtX3syZ7IXH8vI6MmmhHqtgqrzX7-vhFCN0Nvj9dfSC8fbk5dk3vyvi6T5SVXBrrcwP7gJSb6LtE1JGdWsVZGlQsDamzaUiyc-_dA_DbUdY7gfIgqAqjBuaqbMDc08rJ70GMNpLX1wB_xs/s825/Graggot+Hobgoblin+Cpt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="610" data-original-width="825" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtX3syZ7IXH8vI6MmmhHqtgqrzX7-vhFCN0Nvj9dfSC8fbk5dk3vyvi6T5SVXBrrcwP7gJSb6LtE1JGdWsVZGlQsDamzaUiyc-_dA_DbUdY7gfIgqAqjBuaqbMDc08rJ70GMNpLX1wB_xs/w200-h148/Graggot+Hobgoblin+Cpt.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>And then she painted all of them, and despite the different colors for different roles, she used a nice limited palette to keep the team unified. I'm proud of my sweety -- and also scared of her team; I'm pretty sure my hobgoblins are going to take a beating.<p></p><p>Speaking of which, I painted myself the "Hobgob Scachens." Not much to say about them except they were fun to paint! Also, I painted up the team captain, Graggot. Eventually, I sold my 40K Imperial Guard and Space Marines and switched over to Warhammer fantasy (using the old orange book.) </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNi98vaEfyjIBwO8sps4N6JvGKCjoFvD4lwRk4hbEFUXzxn70W61T4nkry48-YeP8R1KhZse1OYKAxuQ9phyphenhyphenONm2gyB6xZTSFbzzH6WgW-Od37tX-AwigHKhi1TNE7QS1ZtTKU_aNfQRqz/s1050/SatysOrphans+Elite.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1050" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNi98vaEfyjIBwO8sps4N6JvGKCjoFvD4lwRk4hbEFUXzxn70W61T4nkry48-YeP8R1KhZse1OYKAxuQ9phyphenhyphenONm2gyB6xZTSFbzzH6WgW-Od37tX-AwigHKhi1TNE7QS1ZtTKU_aNfQRqz/w400-h229/SatysOrphans+Elite.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />I still have much of my Warhammer Empire army boxed up, still needing some paint, but there's just too much there to bring out, catalogue, paint, organize, and play with. When SPace Hulk 4th edition came out, I took the opportunity to not only get back into 40K, but to get an iteration of the 40K universe that was much more convenient to paint and play. <p></p><p>Much of it is already painted, and you can see my "Orphans" (the name of my Chapter) elsewhere in this blog. Still, it was nice the past couple weeks to take a break from my mandatory projects (Conan, Okko, Zombicides -- yes plural -- Rise of Moloch and yet-to-arrive Everrain.) Since I have all the Orphan terminators I need to play with painted, I decided to paint up one more squad as if they were "elites" within the chapter. Really, they just have a slightly different paint job (a little more red up top to honour they Blood Angels from which the Orphans were seeded.) I also gussied up my Chaplain a little bit (I added a cape!) He will serve as a proxy sergeant for this new squad. I already have three figures painted for the squad. I'm waiting for better weather to prime the remaining pair.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTkxHvS5MD3s3-J6BeRkESx6pR2oA4NN1VY1XG6bZg6xxFECdaF_lB4fs3IFhaP49tr-24LzEL31gAhjvPNZFJWmrr8OeM0K1V1PfUlrIlIeWm0goBT8AvYfHMuldxgOeGynIu2mOKW7Ln/s1800/SPace+Hulk+Chaplain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="608" data-original-width="1800" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTkxHvS5MD3s3-J6BeRkESx6pR2oA4NN1VY1XG6bZg6xxFECdaF_lB4fs3IFhaP49tr-24LzEL31gAhjvPNZFJWmrr8OeM0K1V1PfUlrIlIeWm0goBT8AvYfHMuldxgOeGynIu2mOKW7Ln/w640-h216/SPace+Hulk+Chaplain.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-58557131557440178552021-02-27T08:00:00.001-06:002021-02-27T08:00:06.879-06:00Catching up: Conan Pt 2<p> Here are most of the minions from the Conan game. We've been painting the figures on-and-off among our many other projects since the game arrived the same year my wife and I met.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMpcr43RgADEXrmi8HW1UIMpO897biVsnH8pPhjlwPbG8SWRyny9YcyG9U1j1jYkUq22k_7SHNEb4Tq0MS0cVLpmu6SDM9GWu5YZGsG240wz6fKe9ZXEZO0Vxx179_xkLepD9DKeR9G2sL/s1200/Conan+lion+and+Yogah.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="953" data-original-width="1200" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMpcr43RgADEXrmi8HW1UIMpO897biVsnH8pPhjlwPbG8SWRyny9YcyG9U1j1jYkUq22k_7SHNEb4Tq0MS0cVLpmu6SDM9GWu5YZGsG240wz6fKe9ZXEZO0Vxx179_xkLepD9DKeR9G2sL/w400-h318/Conan+lion+and+Yogah.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>We've completed all the minis in the core and King's pledge boxes. We're still working on figures form the expansions. By which I mean I'm still working on figures from the expansions; my wife has completed 95% of the figures she was "assigned" to paint (we split the work 50-50.)<p></p><p>I guess I just need to hunker down and make than final push so that we'll finally have everything for Conan painted and ready to play.<br /><br /></p><p>I'll split this post into two parts (Part 2 will be posted a day or two from now). This first part shows the heroes and some of the monsters. The second part will focus on minions.</p><p><br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNSBaRITvp7NUbXyQ1xBeYOzElyPcB_5-4BIOWQp2aCCV72uTyDRia_S7WHc3JpRW-CR76pRuP9WC3yTqPfAUHLFCRXvSv3S8QLaT52mr8jItN52-F9m5eZdLe5KNo_21cDTBlkrfv-ghf/s1800/Demons+various.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; By "we" I mean Elizabeth -- my wife. <p></p><p>I got lucky finding her. She is a monster (in a good way) at the painting table -- with a better paint-work ethic than me. We've divided up the figures between us to lighten the load, and she has finished most of hers from the previous games mentioned earlier on this blog -- so she's moved on to Okko, a nice-looking 1-vs-many miniatures board game based on the comic of the same name. </p><p>Elizabeth only has a few things painted, having only started two or three weeks ago, but it's a few things more than I have done. The images here are all her painting. I still have stuff from Rise of Moloch to paint!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJambXBycnYJIuGqY_TKf4h9q5PwdWFX5lNfrjwA3jCVN6ZlBk7_YCETlq4aKOBB4yZYqcJ7mGTwJzBMP9Us5wI_b31pTfqvQ3S54lqLP2gM2JDmZQAGa-xvaZkqn5C8GmOW_pswgA-5l0/s1050/Misc+heroes+and+minions.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="405" data-original-width="1050" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJambXBycnYJIuGqY_TKf4h9q5PwdWFX5lNfrjwA3jCVN6ZlBk7_YCETlq4aKOBB4yZYqcJ7mGTwJzBMP9Us5wI_b31pTfqvQ3S54lqLP2gM2JDmZQAGa-xvaZkqn5C8GmOW_pswgA-5l0/w640-h246/Misc+heroes+and+minions.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-32740592999626228712021-02-17T15:14:00.001-06:002021-02-17T15:14:01.295-06:00Catching Up: Hate<p> Hate was a game I didn't think my wife would enjoy. It was one I had been waiting for since it was announced during the Zombicide Black Plague kickstarter campaign. My original intent was to get the core game so I could use all those barbarians in Black Plague (as well as forces for various fantasy skirmish games.)<br />"But, Carmen, Hate IS a skirmish game!"<br />Yep -- and my wife and I played it together, wailing on each other with rusty blade and devious spell, and loved every moment. She beat me handily in our first played chronicle (campaign.) I look forward to the rematch. We both love it -- not just the simple gameplay (after we decoded the terrible rulebook), but for the excellently sculpted minis. I think my wife said they were the best sculpted she's ever painted. I'm not sure if anything has beaten them yet as that trophy-holder.</p><p>Usually, we are somewhat sticklers for painting the minis as they are represented in the original art for their respective games, but the Hate figures were a little too close in "look" for that to be feasible; we like to easily find our forces on the table during play. So Elizabeth came up with the idea of choosing alternate skin colors as well as color schemes for each tribe. It worked like a charm.</p><p>It's still not finished. We have a half-dozen tribes yet to go as well as a few monsters and mercenaries, but we do have enough tribes painted to do a full 6-player chronicle. One thing about these figures is there is an absolute TON of detail to find, decipher, and paint. We only paint either a couple figures at a time, or a couple colors at a time for each tribe. It took me about a week and a half to each of my tribes. But damn, we love our little families of barbarians. </p><p>Elizabeth, are you ready for a rematch? No? Still need to play more Invader, Conan, Rise of Moloch, Sleeping Gods, Aftermatch, Space Hulk and Outer Rim? Ok. Yeah, we love our games.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWAV5118jcxb_l_oXnavwcy5UiUGQvGL_RMk4dugNbLsUPNuHlWayNyR8lXcx0EOsQ3v9Hqgd8gKvsHaEHw2BRvmUTHUZM0IN52_MYizeHH9i81ZqaXP2plIhcCBnyxMB073RrhG8x1qe-/s1350/Mercenaries+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We have a majority of the survivors finished, but still have plenty of xenos and abominations to complete.<br />This isn't everything, just the most recently finished figures. I've also included the bots, sentry guns, and some custom objective markers taken from various manufacturers.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_nPfaf2Iwq2q1i_EcXYfax7xVDLCpUMlTd4lyyiw4GLa83u8A3ScsDX5srxmpjKwkoy2SG_26UMHVptKpQvLUpjCHncoAgTkvb_EKoFhizGlNft0aMSw78CRdRzjVKoGeF7Lou9f7nZsf/s1350/ALien+reps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; And since I've started (trying to) return to this blog, I've lost the habit of photographing everything we paint. But I had a freee day today and spent the time photographing a hell of a lot of stuff -- not hundreds, but enough to make a few posts.
The next few posts will be simple gallery posts -- one for each game the figures represent. I'll start with the first game in our collection that we started painting together as a couple: Zombicide Black Plague.<div>This one we're actually close to finishing EVERYTHING we have for it, including several custom characters and monsters. As such, there aren't very many images here -- just pics of some of the new things, including a great remorhaz (we call it a wyrm) my wife painted, It makes for a great "smaller" dragon to play in the game</div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimmZQlJqS88o_nmzjNNa6z-yfbpF_5EWi8q4sjIE6YY5KaEIzOAWS9ch_PaJ7KFSTNoUSJrPzMzZO_KQwgPy6jeNOxnKOuseKtgWvTGNji4aGKYdcIPpq9jadVAtAKHaZxTDQPIAJnKvB1/s1050/Misc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="582" data-original-width="1050" height="354" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimmZQlJqS88o_nmzjNNa6z-yfbpF_5EWi8q4sjIE6YY5KaEIzOAWS9ch_PaJ7KFSTNoUSJrPzMzZO_KQwgPy6jeNOxnKOuseKtgWvTGNji4aGKYdcIPpq9jadVAtAKHaZxTDQPIAJnKvB1/w640-h354/Misc.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYIuMapzURbTzFEg5kdsydpTW6DxcYq72vv1wJtmBdd_6_RKgO5YGZlTaThU1ONlXmxYKanwhOjPGrskr_KRIZD_TjnI4EKFObvEfoOw_NWz6X-Dz06NMl0gIw1n1uPosKmWW7IiHWTcQo/s600/Tola+and+Ingot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="388" data-original-width="600" height="259" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYIuMapzURbTzFEg5kdsydpTW6DxcYq72vv1wJtmBdd_6_RKgO5YGZlTaThU1ONlXmxYKanwhOjPGrskr_KRIZD_TjnI4EKFObvEfoOw_NWz6X-Dz06NMl0gIw1n1uPosKmWW7IiHWTcQo/w400-h259/Tola+and+Ingot.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdDvnAiYtdAKZwc0PygkUmGvEHuFju6r1fjk0xBGsNU1oYDaegC3Q8PU7FYwocrFrWwRjJjcxjLGvyAKz_a-5N851jYSXePrCQsBg-rMBUelo501eD0MEKugHWeybk2CXJyHmqlVsjzhYE/s2048/Wyrm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1823" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdDvnAiYtdAKZwc0PygkUmGvEHuFju6r1fjk0xBGsNU1oYDaegC3Q8PU7FYwocrFrWwRjJjcxjLGvyAKz_a-5N851jYSXePrCQsBg-rMBUelo501eD0MEKugHWeybk2CXJyHmqlVsjzhYE/w570-h640/Wyrm.jpg" width="570" /></a></div><br />Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-1436780563547522522020-12-11T06:00:00.000-06:002020-12-11T06:00:03.620-06:0040mm Jousting Knight<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipcmPhLynJMDd5l-bE90oYCnOvQr4tw9S6J3Fpna4cc7Oo7yLCEZYVk5OcoL7WRmpQiCw_S4hWsMMVj02OFMlWikp1Sdx_G7tFoU8lFHYMVT0jikcYkXEEGnXRBxuy3ReO4MKiL3Kf8DfW/s2906/IMG_1650.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1082" data-original-width="2906" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipcmPhLynJMDd5l-bE90oYCnOvQr4tw9S6J3Fpna4cc7Oo7yLCEZYVk5OcoL7WRmpQiCw_S4hWsMMVj02OFMlWikp1Sdx_G7tFoU8lFHYMVT0jikcYkXEEGnXRBxuy3ReO4MKiL3Kf8DfW/w640-h238/IMG_1650.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja2tBzcHqvZMTRkP4kHc079XgAJTJ4wjMpCDDrO92WvT9ZrB70NEUbI9LrX9KqVt__GVgCtlOt8u09bZ8VcatDLn95UjaQE655UbkTf05Ja-TPrUXtlCWMWmzihA1m-03UqJc9g4WEvs7s/s1600/IMG_1651.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1261" data-original-width="1600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja2tBzcHqvZMTRkP4kHc079XgAJTJ4wjMpCDDrO92WvT9ZrB70NEUbI9LrX9KqVt__GVgCtlOt8u09bZ8VcatDLn95UjaQE655UbkTf05Ja-TPrUXtlCWMWmzihA1m-03UqJc9g4WEvs7s/s320/IMG_1651.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">When you buy one of these, you get all of this!<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br />Such a great figure from Steve Barber Models, this one kit can be used to build several variations of a jousting knight (at the 40mm scale). I commissioned this piece a year or two ago and was not disappointed with what Steve sculpted for me. (By the way, need a mini sculpted? Steve Barber has a commission service that has very reasonable prices, and he is willing to sculpt anything from 10mm to 54mm. <a href="https://www.stevebarbermodels.com/commission-a-minature" target="_blank">Check it out!</a>)</p><p>Now, this figure does take some expert modelling skills to assemble, and there will be some seams to smooth out and a gap or two to fill, but the result is rewarding -- it's also one heavy miniature; that horse is almost solid metal!</p><p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWSb-bIFx3i5Mwoh9vGaAE6GmRzmSLH6JTATGXE7NOkUInGWEQQ269ZUUqvFBm82ZrJibksvJZDp6Uk1FNNsU7NFJp6RCEX8pzdqx14Yddk7GClBcYbrkjNLgUe_J2AMZ6Da8_PVBR0FoJ/s1600/IMG_1652.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWSb-bIFx3i5Mwoh9vGaAE6GmRzmSLH6JTATGXE7NOkUInGWEQQ269ZUUqvFBm82ZrJibksvJZDp6Uk1FNNsU7NFJp6RCEX8pzdqx14Yddk7GClBcYbrkjNLgUe_J2AMZ6Da8_PVBR0FoJ/w400-h300/IMG_1652.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My first knight -- a little too vanilla, but I'll<br />try something a little more intricate with No. 2<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table>I also asked Steve not to add too many folds/wrinkles to the mantle over the horse so that painters could have a nice large swath to paint whatever heraldry they dared tackle. </p><p><br />"What on earth can I use a 40mm jousting knight for?"</p><p>Well, I commissioned this piece so I could play some jousting game(s). Sure, there are plenty of 28mm knight minis already on the market, but since a jousting game takes up such a small footprint, I wanted to make it almost a display piece in its own right, so I bumped the knight up to 40mm. Now, he's small enough to store away easily, but large enough he can sit on a shelf, look great, and gather dust. Some day, I want to add some more customization elements (helms, shields, crests, new lance, lance decorations, new horse pose etc), as well as foot knights, servants, squires, heralds -- basically, everyone else who worked at tournament. </p><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-86469680779536746972020-12-07T13:17:00.000-06:002020-12-07T13:17:03.097-06:00Playing new old games: Qwik<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTpOSsiD2fRb9pcvj4q1kEAiTbowGk2kk_UZL0bIzdL3Pce3zUd3J3Wuf7W1-TWlfvAJuO5GB2V2tRx2J0gf7eVKAGFPOUOZb9kCXp2b6ZO7x3aJvJoXm0OiM7SRfXoB2vgSN_wU9Xo1J-/s1500/The+Dirt+Dogs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="813" data-original-width="1500" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTpOSsiD2fRb9pcvj4q1kEAiTbowGk2kk_UZL0bIzdL3Pce3zUd3J3Wuf7W1-TWlfvAJuO5GB2V2tRx2J0gf7eVKAGFPOUOZb9kCXp2b6ZO7x3aJvJoXm0OiM7SRfXoB2vgSN_wU9Xo1J-/w400-h216/The+Dirt+Dogs.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p>My wife and I have quite the board game collection, as well as a few tabletop miniatures games. I even posted <a href="http://carmensminiaturepainting.blogspot.com/2013/09/dreadball-orc-and-corp-teams.html" target="_blank">some blog entries</a> here as I painted the teams.<p></p><p>I played it for the first time a couple weeks ago. When I met my wife, I learned that she loves co-op games, and enjoyed competitive games, but not necessarily "take-that" or fighting games. So I figured she wouldn't like Blood Bowl or Dreadball, both of which I owned but were in mothballs.</p><p>As the years went by, we started playing more and more of those competitive, take-that, and fighting games, culminating with Adrian Smith's "Hate." Then the Harry Potter: Catch the Snitch Kickstarter campaign popped onto the scene and I thought that would be a fun game to play (and my wife loves the Harry Potter franchise.) But I remembered I already had a couple "sports" games, so that was the catalyst to dig those games out from hiding.</p><p>We tried out Blood Bowl; the rules took a a little bit to get back into, but after a few turns, we had things in hand. Verdict: Wife liked it -- it was nothing special, but she enjoyed playing it. Next we tried Dreadball. Verdict: She loved it! She already (after one week) has her sights set onto creating a Mechanites team, though she's also enjoying playing her human corporation tea.<br />I've since forgot all about the Harry Potter game.</p><p>If you haven't played Dreadball (and/or have played Blood Bowl,) here are a few comparison points between the two games:</p><p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb6jPMMbZWt0L9xXm4ztQ_lCo0ljTeH0koWXGePyhWgM06murkxtJ8J66u3QGWv3_-kCuVP3doi8eNMpvC_9XwXMVnxk_am4kUXf0ne_1I853XlkbadlMSQqnCpFrA2oOu89wNiwTSiO6S/s1246/IMG_1690.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1246" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb6jPMMbZWt0L9xXm4ztQ_lCo0ljTeH0koWXGePyhWgM06murkxtJ8J66u3QGWv3_-kCuVP3doi8eNMpvC_9XwXMVnxk_am4kUXf0ne_1I853XlkbadlMSQqnCpFrA2oOu89wNiwTSiO6S/w385-h400/IMG_1690.jpg" width="385" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Dreadball Hobgoblins on the same team try to one-up each other<br />and will punish each other for failure. I love it. (art by me!)<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br />Similarities</p><p>-- Both games have a "tackle zone," (Called a threat zone in Dreadball.) In Blood Bowl the zone is all the squares adjacent to the player; in DB, it's only the three hexes in front of a player. Both games require some sort of test to be made to be able to evade out of one of those zones.</p><p>-- Blood Bowl and Dreadball, a player's turn ends mostly when you drop or lose the ball (or after a score,) though, in Dreadball, if you fail an evade test, you can keep on going. So it's a little more high-stakes in Blood Bowl.</p><p>-- If you drop the ball in both games, it will scatter, and a player who is able must try to pick it up.</p><p>-- There are a large number of teams and stars/MVPs to choose from in both games. Blood Bowl has 21 official teams and 23 Star players. Dreadball has 29 teams and 67 MVPs and team captains. Both have the requisite humans, dwarves, elves and orcs. Blood Bowl expands on the fantasy races with Chaos and Undead, for example; Dreadball has more aliens, such as the the Judwan, Mechanites, and Sphyr, for example. Both games have large player options.</p><p>-- Both games have team-building, and league rules, along with coaches, cheerleaders, and player development and injuries.</p><p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihdefD_6id-2_VnOxsywxDRAIvIFdKCuV-TAmTUx-2pPATWPO97_KNhyphenhyphen7nluTmNCzUqrS45xT_zKhuYtUiPwzFhBmU6CY-p8X4xtQiJuOi8Trb1A3JwcGmzkRZuTz6zWTNIPuBpOLer39f/s1600/Dreadball+Iotacorp+team.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="642" data-original-width="1600" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihdefD_6id-2_VnOxsywxDRAIvIFdKCuV-TAmTUx-2pPATWPO97_KNhyphenhyphen7nluTmNCzUqrS45xT_zKhuYtUiPwzFhBmU6CY-p8X4xtQiJuOi8Trb1A3JwcGmzkRZuTz6zWTNIPuBpOLer39f/w400-h160/Dreadball+Iotacorp+team.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My beloved Iotacorp Rockets -- my first Dreadball team.<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br />Differences<br />-- Blood Bowl: After a score, you re-set a players to start a new drive.<br />-- Dreadball: After a score, players do not re-set as a new ball is launched (and woe to those who forget to move out of the way of the ball launching area!)</p><p>-- Blood Bowl: Game play is a little slower, more methodical. If you roll particularly well on some "tests" (passing, catching, evading etc.) you are rewarded with a free run, throw, slam (tackle) etc.</p><p>-- In Blood Bowl, the fans will try to hurt you if given the chance.<br />-- in Dreadball, the fans will cheer great plays; and you can "collect" those cheers to inspire you to do better in the game.</p><p>That's all I can think of off the top of my head; I'm sure there are more similarities, but if I had to choose one sports game, I'd go with Dreadball. Though, Blood Bowl still has a place in my heart even if it's only for the nostalgia.</p><p><br /></p>Evilcartoonisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601323279665213451noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353993238228420112.post-10213999137407782152020-11-30T13:10:00.001-06:002020-11-30T13:10:01.275-06:00How to paint 5 o'clock shadow<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN0rsh7eoWajJ9ksyzHT09zb5hv61fIvfdHz-kdgi2skCadaDOBqAVOhsEo5pIaGwZJcHh_2MzTKawEJLREeTA0KzbGDJAQ_qyCMSet8v0az2uQiRE0BTuryWLAJ42QDbeao5kq1P3dGx4/s300/5+oclock+shadow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="275" data-original-width="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN0rsh7eoWajJ9ksyzHT09zb5hv61fIvfdHz-kdgi2skCadaDOBqAVOhsEo5pIaGwZJcHh_2MzTKawEJLREeTA0KzbGDJAQ_qyCMSet8v0az2uQiRE0BTuryWLAJ42QDbeao5kq1P3dGx4/s0/5+oclock+shadow.jpg" /></a></div><br />Painting 5 o'clock shadow is easy: Paint the affected area gray. Just a quick update: Yes, I'm still painting minis, in fact, I've painted more in the past 6 weeks than I have in the past full year! Part of that is because I lost my job after 17 years at the newspaper. And while it was a little bittersweet, I've moved on to my next endeavor as a freelance illustrator! <br /></p><p>I've already done work for Hydra Miniatures (doing the back covers of the War Rocket and Retro Raygun rulebooks), and I'm doing ongoing work for Test of Honour (2nd edition) by Grey for Now Games. I also have a few pieces in the scenario book for Space Cadets Away Missions (many of which you can find in this blog long before the art was published.)</p><p>As part of going freelance, I've created a website where you can view example pieces of art and request illustrations. Check it out, pass the word and share the link!
