Black and White Zombicide: Toxic and Berserker

I tried out a couple monochromatic zombies, the toxic and berserker variants. I'm not happy with the toxic zombie; I'll try some other greens on her (thank goodness, I'm keeping a journal.) I think my mind is stuck on "neon" green to reflect the bright green of the original plastic, when I should be concentrating on muting that neon. I'll see what I can come up with.

On the flip side, I love the berserker's colors. Those came iust as I had envisioned out on the first try. I'll be sticking to that recipe.

I'm still looking at storage options, so until I find one, I won't be painting too many of my zombies just yet. I want to, though. Winter is gathering strength, and so is my desire to paint.

  1. Have you seen anything from the company Portable Warfare? Their APC might help you out quite a bit. I have just under two hundred zombies in three of their boxes. I have a hard time finding anything else as useful at the price point. Their bag is my favorite on the market, and I LOVE their foam.

With all that said, I LOVE this project. I really need to get into gear with improving my painting, and you constantly remind me of that.

    1. Thanks for the url! Those look nice and simple- how many figures does each box hold?

I'd love to just be able to get some 1" pluck-foam trays- then I could fit them 3-high into one of my extra Zombicide boxes. I'm pretty sure I could fit all my zombies (and maybe a few more) that way -- maybe. I'm picking up a Walk of the Dead box soon, too, so I'll have to count all my zombies before getting anything.

  2. I agree with the green, she is the color of steamed brussel sprouts. Maybe istead of muting, add flouro green wash and make it really stand out like she is glowing. I love the orange, and would like to see a tutorial how you did both if thats possible. I too have zed storage issues, thanks varagian for the link I will check them out!

    1. Here's a quicky on how I did the berserker: Paints (all Foundry, from darkest to lightest): Red Oxide 102B, Spearshaft 13A, Orange 3A, Ochre 4A.

Red oxide is painted over the entire mini. Drybrush Spearshaft. Then drybrush a bit of Spearshaft mixed with Orange -- from up to down to simulate light coming from above. Add a little more orange to pick out some folds on the clothing, as well as to paint the skin (except wrinkles, creases, wounds and such.) Then start adding Ochre 4A to the orange to add successive highlights to the skin.

Green will be a similar process, but with different colors. I'll try to remember to repost this info when post with a new Toxic zombie.

    3. Thanks for the recipe for the berserker, that is a great color scheme, even if I do not have anything to apply it to currently.

  3. I actually like the Toxic variant, but mileage will vary. Have you tried looking at her when she is in the middle of a bunch of greyscales? That may change the 'feel' of the colour for you.

    1. Sh'es close, but it might just be that there's a lot of dark green on her. I think I'm ok with her skin color. I'll try a couple more recipes I have in mind.

I want to get a similar effect as the berserker; I didn't use any neon-ish colors on him, but he still "glows" nicely. I prefer the muted (yet somehow glowing) palette, so that it fits better with the grays.

    2. I think the best impression I have of the dark green colour is that it's too "healthy". But maybe not worth changing significantly.

Amazing project, you continue to impress the hell out of me...

    3. Hmm, that's a good assessment to go from. After a couple trials in the past couple days, I'm down to just trying to find the right base color. The other minor problem I'm having is that a lot of my greens have a glossy finish (which I can deal with using matte varnish.)

The toxic zombies are my least favorite and may get painted last, so I have plenty of time to figure this out.

    1. The price is right. I'm also looking at eggshell foam options.
